A workshop on ‘crime scene management’ was organized by the Nür Institute of Forensic & Strategic Studies (NIFSS) in collaboration with Quaid-e-Azam University’s Department of Defence and Strategic Studies. The workshop was designed for students who were taking a course on nuclear forensics, so it focused on radiological crime scenes.

The workshop was divided into two parts. The first part covered how to approach a crime scene and record it accurately without disturbing the scene or the evidence. The second part focused on managing a radiological crime scene, where participants learned how to collect evidence, package it correctly, and record the necessary information in the documentation.

The first part of the workshop was a participant-generated activity. The participants were divided into groups and assigned different types of crime scenes. They had to create a story and build a crime scene around it. Then, they were rotated to different crime scenes and asked to record it using different methods, such as sketching, taking notes, and photography.

The second part of the workshop was more focused and led by experts. The participants were given hands-on experience of lifting fingerprints, collecting DNA samples, radiological evidence, measuring radioactivity, guns and bullet casings, and blood samples. They were also taught how to record chain of custody forms and use personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid contaminating the crime scene.

The workshop was concluded at a small yet gracefull certificates awarding ceremony in DSS. All successful participants were given certificates of Achievements by Dr Siara Aquil and Dr Salma Malik along with Ms Aisha Wasif.

The workshop was well-received by the university, and other departments have already contacted NIFSS about conducting workshops for their students. NIFSS plans to organize the workshop again soon and will also allow a limited number of participants from outside the university to attend. The workshop will be announced on the NIFSS website, and seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
